This proposal reimagines the EV charging station as a transformative typology that offers the capacity to transcend the conventions set by traditional fuel stations. By critically appraising the motoring industry's spatial impact, it addresses the compromises inherent in the standardized car and gas station relationship, which has led to an uninspired driving experience. The advent of electric vehicles (EVs) and the alternative nature of EV charging stations offer a unique opportunity to rethink both the act of charging, and its broader implications for driving and urban culture.
The primary design focus is the development of the integrated Engaia carport system equipped with photovoltaic (PV) panels, lighting, EV dispensers, and structural components optimized for material and energy efficiency. Moving beyond utilitarian standardization, the carport introduces a distinct architectural language, creating a visually compelling and sustainable solution.
Complementing the carport, the proposal examines the charging station as a modular kit of parts, comprising of adaptable pods designed to accommodate a range of functions. The pods, alongside the carport, form a flexible inventory of building blocks for assembling diverse station configurations. Each pod redefines the charging station experience with programs such as: a serene meditation space, soundproofed work booths, and F&B facilities, augmenting the station environment and experience with a contemporary urban character and addressing the evolving needs of drivers during the typical 20-minute charging period.
The Engaia carport is envisioned as a modular and adaptable solution, utilizing a standardized yet flexible system of components. This allows each charging station to easily expand, contract, or reorganize according to specific site requirements, user demands, and evolving urban contexts. Its reconfigurability encourages diverse spatial arrangements, facilitating a seamless integration into varying environments.
Central to Engaia’s sustainable strategy is its integrated photovoltaic roofing system, transforming the carport into an active energy generator. These roofs optimize solar orientation for maximum efficiency, powering EV chargers and auxiliary functions. Combining structural elegance with environmental performance, the PV roofs enhance both visual appeal and operational sustainability, promoting renewable energy adoption within urban infrastructures.
A The work booth pod features compact, soundproofed spaces with desks, charging ports, Wi-Fi, ergonomic seating, natural lighting, and climate control.
The "Om" room pod provides a compact, soundproofed, serene space for meditation, light exercise, stretching, featuring calming lighting, natural finishes, and ventilation.
The F&B pod offers grab-and-go healthy snacks, beverages, vending machines, casual seating, modular layouts, and fully automated services.
A defining principle of the planning approach is to maintain continuity of the site’s pastoral context by making green, open space.
